Joined 3-Round Granny Squares

  • Granny Cluster (GC) – 3dc in indicated space
  • Restore Double Crochet (Rdc)
  • Load Double Crochet (Ldc)
  • Chain (ch)
  • Slip Stitch (slst)
  • Load Double Crochet (Ldc) To work the first stitch of round 2, use the slack connecting yarn to make 2 yarn overs, (Yo and pull through 2 loops) twice to complete the dc.
  • Restore Double Crochet (Rdc) To work the first dc of round 3, take first loop off hook, use the slack yarn to make a yarn over, put dropped loop back on hook. Next, (yo and  pull through 2 loops) twice to complete a double crochet.
  • Work First RoundS (WFRs) Since the first 2 rounds are the same for all squares, this abbreviation is used every time you need to start a new square. To do this:

Round 1: Insert a stitch marker into the loop on the hook. Yo 4 times, make a floating ring. (yo, pull through 2 loops) twice (counts as first dc of this round). Drop the marked loop and extra 2 yarn overs off the hook. 2dc in FR. (ch2, GC into FR) 3 times. ch1, sc into first st of round (counts as corner space).

Round 2: Ldc, 2dc in same corner space. (Ch1, GC in next corner space, ch2, GC in same corner space) 3 times. Ch1, GC in next space, ch1, sc in first st of round (counts as corner space). 

  1. Foundation Row: WBRs, Rdc, 2dc in same corner space, (ch1, GC in next space, ch1, GC in next space, ch2, GC in same space) 2 times, (ch1, GC in next space) twice, ch3, * breakaway to next square: WBRs. Rdc, 2dc in same corner space, (slst in first ch1 space behind hook, GC in next space) twice, ch1, slst in corner space behind hook, ch1, GC in same corner space, (ch1, GC in next space) twice, ch2, GC in same space, (ch1, GC in next space) twice, ** ch3, repeat from * to ** 1 more time, end with ch2 (3 squares started).
  2. Return Row: * continuing around current square: GC in same corner space, (ch1, GC in next space) twice, ch1, slst in ch3 space, continue to next square: (Ch1, GC in next space) 3 times, repeat repeat from * 2 more times, end with ch3.
  3. Joined Foundation Row: WBRs. Rdc, 2dc in same space, (slst in first ch1 space behind hook, GC in next space) twice, ch1, counting back 6dc and 1ch from behind hook, slst in the next slst, ch1, GC in same corner space, (ch1, GC in next space) twice, ch3, * breakaway to next square: WBRs. Rdc, 2dc in same corner space, (slst in first ch1 space behind hook, GC in next space) twice, ch1, counting back 6dc and 1ch from behind hook, slst in the next slst, ch1, GC in same corner space, (slst in first ch1 space behind hook, GC in next space) twice, ** ch1, counting back 6dc and 1ch from behind hook, slst in the next slst, ch1, GC in same space, (ch1, GC in next space) twice, ch3, repeat from * to ** one more time, in last square: ch1, slst in first space behind hook, ch1, GC in same space, (Ch1, GC in next space) twice, ch2.
  4. Return Row as in step 2.
  5. Work Joined Foundation Row as in step 3, work Return Row as in step 2.
  6. Finish Left Edge: continuing around current square: GC in same corner space, (ch1, GC in next space) twice, ch1, slst in ch3 space, * continue to next square: (Ch1, GC in next space) 3 times, ch1, slst in ch3 space, repeat repeat from *1 more time, end with ch1, slst into next dc.
